Description from the seller
Superb and important 19th-century bronze animal sculpture, titled "Chien d’arrêt au faisan" (Pointer with pheasant), from an old edition cast during the artist's lifetime, after the original model by the famous French master sculptor Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810-1879).
This major work testifies to the artist's virtuosity in capturing dramatic tension and the perfect anatomy of the hunting dog in point, facing the game.
- Period: Second half of the 19th century (Edition cast during the author's lifetime, circa 1870).
- Material: Genuine bronze with original two-tone patina (deep brown nuances and medal-like reflections of great depth).
- Signature: Signed "P.J. MÊNE" very clearly and in relief on the terrace.
- Quality: Exceptional finesse of the chiselling, notably on the dog's fur, the pheasant's plumage and the vegetal details of the base (oak leaves).
- Historical assembly: Complex period mounting. The elements (dog, pheasant, vegetation) were cast separately and then assembled by original iron dowels and screws in forged iron, perfectly visible underneath. Absolute proof of an authentic 19th-century period foundry.
- Provenance: Private collection, France. Estate piece. Does not require any export license for delivery within Europe.
Condition:
Magnificent overall presentation. The patina shows superb natural and authentic wear on the reliefs, testifying to its age.
To be fully transparent: the historical weak point of this piece (the base of the tail) has undergone a very careful old restoration and is stable. A fine surface crack remains visible on the top as well as a very slight joining line almost invisible underneath. The tail is perfectly consolidated, rigid and integral to the piece, not affecting in any way the aesthetic value, solidity or stability of this superb collector’s item.
