Description from the seller
Impressive and spectacular solid bronze mural crucifix, representative of the Brutalist / Modernist current of the 1960s–1970s.
Original Technique and Finish:
This sculpture stands out for its original polychrome patina, created in the workshop to conjure a striking play of contrasts and textures:
- Solid bronze structure with clean, geometric shapes cut out.
- Original verdigris and brown/black finish reworked in the recesses to enhance relief, depth, and to simulate noble oxidation of ancient bronze.
- Gold highlights and polished edges on the protruding ridges as well as on the figure of Christ, beautifully catching the light.
Artistic Analysis:
Inspired by post-war sacred art and mystical Surrealism (evoking the world of Salvador Dalí and his famous Christ of Saint John of the Cross), the piece combines a flamboyant structure with stylized sacred rays and a golden, slender, expressive Christ.
On the back, the assembly of Christ and rays is original and secured robustly by bronze screws.
A theatrical piece, original and of high-quality casting, ideal for a modern interior, a collection of sacred art, or Brutalist Mid-Century objects.
