A 19th‑century Myanmar votive column in South‑East Asian (Thai/Cambodian) style, carved from wood lacquered black and covered in gold leaf, 17 cm high, 7 cm in diameter, 281 g, in good condition with age‑related wear.
Description from the seller
Southeast Asia (Thai/Cambodian style) – Votive column / votive reliquary in black lacquered wood with gold leaf – Registers of standing Buddhas within niches & architectural elements
Presentation & Iconography
Magnificent and intriguing cylindrical Buddhist votive piece, carved from dense solid wood, hollowed with an axial cavity beneath the base (traditionally serving as a place for a votive deposit or a reliquary).
The object features an extremely intricate high-relief decoration all around its circumference:
Main decoration: Several architectural niches housing standing Buddha figures (in the blessing posture / apaya mudra) alternating with miniature stupas and stylized floral/vine motifs.
Top: Crowned by a grooved dome in the shape of an opened lotus blossom.
Finish & Patina: The sculpture is enhanced with a traditional black lacquer undercoat (thitsi) and then fully coated with gold leaf. The natural wear of the gilding reveals the dark background, providing a powerful visual contrast and an antique patina.
Technical characteristics
Origin: Southeast Asia (Buddhist tradition)
Materials: Carved wood, black lacquer, gold leaf gilding
Height: 17 cm
Diameter: 7 cm
Weight: 281 g
Overall condition: Fine state of preservation with an authentic aged patina.
Gilding & Lacquer: Normal wear with flaking and small losses on the gilding, revealing the underlying black lacquer on the reliefs and handling areas.
Structure: Dense and sound wood, solid construction with no major cracks
