Het melkmeisje is a 19th-century oil painting on panel from the Netherlands, attributed to the circle of Jan Hendrik van de Laar, hand-signed, and measuring 24 by 22.5 cm, sold with its frame.
Description from the seller
Dutch school ca. 1830-1840 - Circle of Jan Hendrik van de Laar
Oil on panel
Bottom left remnants of a signature
‘The milkmaid’
A masterfully painted genre scene from the first half of the 19th century. Bottom left, remnants of a signature seem to be visible. Unfortunately, it is no longer clearly readable. The painting strongly resembles work from the vicinity of Jan Hendrik van de Laar (1807-1874).
The scene is set at the entrance of a village dwelling or farm, with in the background a view into a village street with staff and a child, and in the foreground a rambling chicken. Above the doorway there is a signboard indicating a milk-selling point ("MILK").
The painting aligns seamlessly with the tradition of the early 19th century and the revival of 17th-century Dutch genre painting. The work is characterized by a bright and fresh color palette and attention to detail in the depiction of the fabric of the clothing, the brick walls, and the earthenware.
Dimensions of panel: 16.5 x 19 cm.
Condition:
- In good condition, the frame shows signs of aging and some imperfections.
