Description from the seller
SAULNIER - Last Call on the Chesterfield - Mixed media on canvas
Mixed media techniques, acrylic painting · digital painting · Hand-signed · 2026
Upside down on a Chesterfield sofa with worn tufting, a young man has thrown an arm over his eyes. White shirt unbuttoned, tie loosened, belt still fastened: the night is over, or it never really began. At the foot of the sofa, two polished shoes sit on the parquet, abandoned in a heap.
The painting captures the moment afterward, when one no longer knows if one is asleep or pretending. The gesture of the arm, the counterpart of the hand reaching toward the floor, the mess of fabrics: everything seems to fall softly, without a sound. One thinks of Sargent interiors and the late-night rooms in Fitzgerald’s novels.
An image of fatigue and freedom, where disorder becomes a form of grace.
Mixed media: acrylic paint on pigment-ink print, matte varnish.
Varnish applied by hand, for deeper colors and durable protection of the work.
Support: premium stretched canvas on wood frame, ready to hang.
Format: to be specified.
Signed SAULNIER · Galerie Labo Joconde / Atelier Joconde · Certificate of authenticity provided.
SAULNIER is one of the creations bringing together artists Le Yack, Neo Pablo and Popsan within Atelier Joconde, a family studio where three sensibilities coexist: neorealism, pop, and free figuration. Under this name, the Atelier explores portraiture and still figures, those moments when a person seems suspended between two gestures: waiting, letting go, lowering the eyes, looking into the distance.
The through line is the silence of rooms and gazes. White interiors, windows, worn parquet floors, and city facades serve as the backdrop to figures who say nothing and leave to the viewer the task of guessing what comes next. The painting, clean and poised, dialogues with Hopper’s legacy and post-war portraiture, in a cold light and an endless waiting.
Each work is a unique piece.
