Decorative Study – Stylized Birds / Hybrid Creatures
around 1940
Artists : Paule Ingrand (1910-1997) & Max Ingrand (1908-1969)
(work falling within the couple's joint graphic labor)
Technique : Unfixed pastel, crayon and graphite on paper
Dimensions : 62 × 46.7 cm
Signature / Inscriptions :
* Characteristic red studio stamp “PAULE INGRAND”
* Red stylized emblem (studio seal) in the upper part
Period / Style : Art Deco – decorative explorations, circa 1940
Large and powerful decorative study treated in a palette of warm earth tones (oranges, browns, ochres) contrasted with deep blacks and whites.
Two hybrid figures, half bird and half totemic creature, unfold with force: enormous circular eyes, hooked beaks, stylized wings and talons, feather and scale motifs. The gesture is direct and expressive — pastel smudges, overlays, energetic outlines — characteristic of the graphic research conducted jointly by the Ingrand couple.
This large sheet sits within the collaborative work of Paule and Max Ingrand, where the stylized animal (often laden with symbolism) served as a motif for panels, engraved glass decorations or monumental projects.
Paule Ingrand, draughtswoman and fresco painter trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs, brought graphic strength and sensitivity to color. Max Ingrand, master glassmaker, frequently contributed to technical transcription and the development of forms. Together, they developed a decorative language at the crossroads of Art Deco, modernism and influences from non-Western sources.
Rare and large-format piece, direct and intense testimony of the couple’s workshop work. Ideal for collectors of Art Deco and 20th-century graphic arts.
Condition :
Unfixed pastel. Some small creases, a tear visible in the upper part and a reinforcing piece of tape applied on the reverse. Wear and studio traces consistent with a working sheet. Sold unframed.
