J.-A. Dulaure's Histoire physique, civile et morale de Paris — 10 text volumes plus an atlas, an 11-volume French collection published 1823–1858 (text volumes 1823–1824 by Guillaume; atlas 1858 by Furne et Cie).
Description from the seller
J.-A. Dulaure — Histoire physique, civile et morale de Paris — 10 volumes + Atlas — 1823–1858
Important historical-topographical collection dedicated to the city of Paris, to its urban evolution, to its institutions, monuments, customs and events that have marked its history.
Composition of the lot: 11 physical volumes in total.
10 volumes of text, numbered I to X, second edition, Paris, Guillaume, Libraire, 1823–1824.
1 atlas volume, Paris, Furne et Cie, 1858, sixth edition, revised, corrected and expanded with notes and appendix by J.-L. Belin.
It should be noted that the atlas belongs to a later edition than the ten volumes of text.
Iconographic apparatus
The work is illustrated with engravings depicting monuments, buildings, views and historical testimonies of the French capital.
The atlas contains cartographic material of particular interest, with large folding plans of Paris from different historical periods. Among those documented in the photographs are plans related to the city under Philip Augustus, Francis I and Louis XIII, as well as a large nineteenth-century map of Paris.
The maps show the evolution of the urban layout, fortifications, road network and the main buildings of the city.
Bindings and conservation
The ten volumes feature uniform period bindings, with decorated spines and labels bearing the title and numeration. The atlas has a half-leather binding with marbled boards.
General condition consistent with age and use: wear to the covers, scuffing, abrasions to the spines and ends, with more evident defects on some volumes. Inside there are foxing, stains and yellowing of the paper.
The large folded maps of the atlas show signs of folding, foxing and small tears or localized separations along some folds, as visible in the photographs.
Important: the total number of engravings and maps has not yet been verified by page-by-page collation; therefore bibliographic completeness cannot be guaranteed.
A collection of considerable interest for enthusiasts and collectors of Paris history, historical topography, antique cartography and nineteenth-century illustrated books.
The lot includes all 11 pictured volumes: 10 volumes of text and 1 atlas. The photographs form an integral part of the description.
