Henry Simon (1910–1987) is a renowned Vendée painter and ceramist, often nicknamed the “painter of happiness.” Trained at the Beaux-Arts in Nantes and then in Paris, his artistic trajectory was deeply marked by his captivity in East Prussia during the Second World War, a trauma he powerfully bears witness to in his collection of watercolors Companions of Silence. After a revelatory trip to Algeria that definitively brightened his color palette, he settled in Vendée and joined the Saint-Jean-de-Monts artists’ group. His paintings, watercolors, and ceramics celebrate daily life with tenderness, the landscapes of the Vendée marshes, fishing scenes, and sacred art. Named a Knight of the Arts and Letters in 1978, he passed away in his hometown. Today, his memory endures in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie thanks to the renovation of his historic studio, “Les Rimajures,” now labeled Maison des Illustres and open to the public for exhibitions
