Description from the seller
Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) Two Figures Watercolor on Paper, circa 1978
Signature: Signed bottom right: Marcus Cachet from the workshop on the back: Marcus de Vestele – Atelier de l’artiste
Dimensions: 34 × 25.5 cm
Sold unframed
Condition:
Good general workshop condition. Light paper, some slight age traces consistent with a work from the late 1970s, coming directly from the artist’s studio.
Provenance: Artist’s studio of Marcus de Vestele.
Description:
Cobra composition by Marcus de Vestele, circa 1978.
Two figures face each other in a white field. On the left, an intensely yellow form, almost totemic: a circular white-reserved head, body opened by the paper’s reservas (white areas), a cobalt blue arc crowning it like a halo, and a broad gray mass closing the edge.
On the right, an ochre and brown figure, more legible, seated in profile in a chair drawn with brown and gray lines, in front of a yellow field. Two horizontal yellow bands anchor the bottom of the sheet.
The contrast is clear: on one side the sign, on the other the seated figure. The gesture remains spontaneous, economical, typically Cobra — solid flat colors, paper reserves, tension between human presence and abstraction.
The color palette—yellow, blue, ochre, gray—structures the space without closing it.
A characteristic piece of Marcus de Vestele’s late-1970s works on paper, coming directly from the artist’s studio.
Biography:
Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) was a Belgian artist best known as a marble sculptor (notably in Carrara and with Bardiglio marble). Alongside his sculptural practice, he developed a significant body of pictorial work throughout his life, which remained confidential for a long time and is now sought after by collectors.
Strongly influenced by the Cobra movement (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille, Constant), he adopts its primitive figuration, spontaneous line, and the tension between figure and abstraction. His 1970s works on paper combine the sculptor’s precision with a free gestural approach. Directly from the studio, this production constitutes an essential facet of his oeuvre.
