Küstenszene mit Fischer, a 19th‑century oil on canvas coastal scene by the British school, from the United Kingdom, with a frame, image size 15.2 × 22.8 cm (frame 25.4 × 32.8 cm).
Description from the seller
Coast Scene with Fisherman / Figures by the Cliff Coast (attributed)
Finely worked maritime coastal landscape in moodful light. In the foreground, two figures (fishermen) can be seen on a sandy beach – one bent over handling equipment, and a standing figure with rods or poles over the shoulder. In the left background, a prominent, light cliff / limestone rock rises, on its cove a ruin or fortification is situated. The sky is characterized by dramatic clouds glowing in pink and violet tones through which the sunlight breaks. On the calm sea, a sailing ship is visible in the distance.
Art painter
Unknown (English School, 19th century)
Origin
Great Britain (England)
(The reverse stamp on the canvas clearly points to the venerable London art supply manufacturer Winsor & Newton, 38 Rathbone Place, London).
Era & Period
Mid to second half of the 19th century (ca. 1840–1880, Victorian era)
Dating note: The reverse stamp “PREPARED BY WINSOR & NEWTON, 38 RATHBONE PLACE, LONDON” without the addition “LIMITED” (introduced in 1882) precisely dates the canvas to the period between ca. 1839 and 1881.
Style
Romantic / Victorian landscape and marine painting
(Inspired by the British tradition of landscape painting after J. M. W. Turner and John Constable, with focus on light mood, cloud formations, and evocative nature depiction).
Technique
Oil on canvas (stretched on a panel frame)
Dimensions
Image size (without frame): 15.2 cm × 22.8 cm
Overall size (with frame): 25.4 cm × 32.8 cm
Condition
Painting: in good to very good condition for its age. The colors are well preserved, with minimal age-related patina and fine craquelure. No obvious major damage.
Frame: decorative, molded wooden frame with silvered/gilded surface finish. Shows authentic signs of age and use (bumps, flaking of the frame at the edges where the red bole substrate becomes visible, giving the frame a charming antique look).
Shipping
Carefully packed to be shockproof and shipped as a insured parcel with tracking.
