Description from the seller

Christ Pantocrator in Laminated Silver
Punch: 925 336 FI (Paterna e Livi of Florence)
Measurements: 22x19x1.5 cm
Florence
Italy
1980s

Description:

Splendid Icon depicting Christ Pantocrator, with relief work completely clad in a thin layer of 925 silver by the “Paterna e Livi” of Florence with the corresponding punch mark.
The face of Christ is printed

The image shows a sacred icon of Jesus Christ Pantocrator, placed inside a rich and detailed frame in raised-work silver (called riza or oklad in Orthodox tradition).
Here is a detailed description of the main elements:

Central Representation

• The face: At the center of the icon emerges the painted face of Jesus, characterized by stern yet serene features, large and intense eyes, and a dark beard. The skin shows subtle signs of aging or craquelure, typical of traditional icons.
• The halo (aureole): Around the head is visible a circular silver halo decorated, engraved with Greek letters inscribed on the arms of the cross (typically O Ω Ν, meaning “The One Who Is”).

Symbolic Elements and Gesture

• The right hand: Jesus is depicted with the right hand raised in the classic blessing gesture, with the fingers positioned to form the Christ monogram (IC XC).
• The Gospel: In the left hand he holds an open book (the Gospel), also completely clad in silver, on which are inscribed writings in Cyrillic or ecclesiastical Old Slavic characters.

The Riza (Silver Covering)

• The garments: The body and the clothing of Jesus are entirely covered by the embossed silver sheet, which imitates the folds of the fabric and reflects the light, creating a strong visual contrast with the painted face.
• The outer frame: The riza extends over the entire exterior surface with very elaborate and detailed geometric and floral motifs.
• The inscription: At the bottom of the frame, in the center, there is a small rectangular plaque with an additional inscription engraved.
