Biography

Biography of Ninni Pagano

N Born in Catania in 1969, Ninni Pagano initially pursues scientific studies, a background that will influence the precision and structure of his future works. His approach to the art world comes through studying with master Antonio Sciacca, with whom he shares a vision of art as a bridge between different eras.

The Poetics: "The Camera of Wonders"
Pagano’s research is closely linked to the concept of Wunderkammer (Camera of Wonders). His works are often conceived as mental spaces where the following merge:

Classicism and Pop: Elements of Greek and Renaissance sculpture are reinterpreted with compact colors and contemporary symbols.
Alchemy and Philosophy: The artist probes the enigma of existence through dreamlike figures (such as his famous "Swan Women") and hermetic references.
Matter: He uses mixed powders to achieve a chromatic compactness that gives the canvases a virtually sculptural dimension.

Achievements and Recognitions
Although his exhibition career fully took off around 2011, he quickly reached milestones of international importance:
Venice Biennale: He exhibited at the 56th edition (2015) within the show "Grazie Italia" at the Guatemala Pavilion.
Rome Triennale: Participation in the Visual Arts Triennale Exhibition in 2014.
Publications: His work is included in the Mondadori Modern Art Catalog (CAM) and in the De Agostini Contemporary Art Atlas.

International Presence: His works have been shown in prestigious venues such as the Altes Dampfbad Museum in Baden-Baden, Germany, and at Art Market in Budapest.
In addition to being a painter and sculptor, Pagano is an expert connoisseur of antique art. This passion is reflected in how he "rescues" the past, not to copy it, but to transform it into a grotesque and fascinating language that speaks of the contradictions of modern man.

Profilo in Luce (Profile in Light)
Ninni Pagano’s work Profilo in Luce combines a Mannerist and surreal aesthetic with a strong theatrical impact to explore themes of isolation and artificiality.

Figurative Description
The work portrays a stylized female figure seated on a curvilinear, colorful armchair (yellow and dark green).

The figure and the pose: The woman's body features markedly elongated proportions, particularly the neck and arms, recalling the sophisticated, exhausted elegance of Mannerism. She wears a red strapless swimsuit, a gold medallion, a coordinating bracelet, a yellow swim cap, and pool goggles placed on the forehead.

Light and atmosphere: A diagonal, energetic beam of light (Caravaggesque chiaroscuro) cuts across the dark background, dramatically illuminating the face and bust of the figure.

Color palette: The contrast between warm tones of the furnishings (yellow, red) and the coolness of the shadowed background creates a sense of temporal suspension.

Critical Analysis

Visual short circuit and enigma: The juxtaposition of swim-related elements (swim cap, goggles) with a bourgeois interior setting (the indoor armchair) creates a disorienting surrealist contrast. The figure seems ready for a dive that will never occur in that domestic environment.

Alienation and contemporary mask: The goggles and swim cap act as a sort of armor or mask. The subject’s stern, impassive gaze transmits a sense of aristocratic solitude and emotional detachment from the external world.

Geometrization of form: Pagano blends the plastic volumetry of bodies with a nearly metallic or mannequin-like smoothness, reminiscent of De Chirico’s Metaphysical painting as well as the stylized painting of the 1920s and 1930s (such as Tamara de Lempicka).
