AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

First edition in Spanish, of extreme rarity and highly sought after by bibliophiles, of Homer’s Iliad, printed in Madrid in the year 1788 in the workshops of Pantaleón Aznar.

In 1788 the scholar Ignacio García Malo, librarian at the Real Biblioteca del Palacio Real de Madrid, brings to the press for the first time (after 2400 years) the complete text of the Iliad in Spanish, with the title The Iliad of Homer, translated from Greek into Spanish verse in hendecasyllable by D. Ignacio García Malo, thus managing to bring to the press the first Hispano edition of the most famous epic poem of Antiquity. Considered a true jewel for bibliophiles, this work initially appeared in three volumes; today the scarcity of its copies is such that even loose volumes are regarded as genuine bibliographic rarities in the collectors’ market, attaining exceptional value for its extreme rarity.

First edition of the first translation into Spanish. Volume two (of 3) containing from Book IX to XVI. Engraved vignette and ornamental marginalia. Full leather binding of the period, with raised bands and gilding on the spine. Somewhat worn but still strong and solid. 20 x 13 cm, 415 grams. [4], 390, [1] p. It is an extremely rare work, very difficult to find. A complete copy in 3 volumes and with a binding very similar to ours was sold in 2020 for €6,500 at Librería de Antaño, in Miami, USA.

"Since this is the first Translation of the Iliad published in Spanish, and given the great difficulties I have spoken of it cannot fail to have required the Translator much work and consumed much time; and since this work is of noticeable utility because of how much its reading can contribute to forming good taste in this beautiful branch of literature and to give Young People a true idea of solid eloquence, I think the Translator very worthy of being granted the license necessary for its printing" - Casimiro Flórez Canseco, Censor of the translation, 1788.
