Description from the seller
Vintage Ceramiche San Giorgio Albisola Hand-Painted Majolica Pitcher with Putto (Cherub)
A beautiful hand-painted majolica pitcher from Ceramiche San Giorgio in Albisola, one of the most celebrated ceramic workshops on the Italian Riviera. This graceful jug combines the old Ligurian painting tradition with the lively, spontaneous brushwork that made Albisola famous in the 20th century.
The decoration
On the front, a chubby winged putto (cherub) with golden curls and a flowing blue drape moves through a landscape, one hand raised as if pointing to the sky. Feathery trees in olive and emerald green, earthy brown ground and soft blue clouds with tiny flying birds wrap around the body and rise up the neck. It’s free, confident brushwork in the spirit of the historic “Antico Savona” tradition, painted quickly by an experienced hand, and every stroke is visible.
The shape
An elegant pear-shaped body with a tall neck and a shaped pouring spout
A striking twisted rope handle, hand-modelled and decorated with cobalt-blue strokes. It’s a sculptural detail you rarely see on standard production jugs.
The base is finished with blue and white bands
Marks
Hand-painted “S. GIORGIO ALBISOLA” on the base
Decorator’s signature painted on the side of the body
Why it’s special
A prestigious workshop. Ceramiche San Giorgio was founded in Albisola in 1958 by master potter Giovanni Poggi with Eliseo Salino and Mario Pastorino. Its kilns were used by major 20th-century artists such as Lucio Fontana, Asger Jorn and Wifredo Lam, and more than two hundred painters and sculptors have worked there.
Entirely handmade. Thrown on the wheel, painted by hand and signed by the decorator, so no two pieces are the same.
Albisola heritage. Albisola has been a centre of Italian ceramics for centuries and is well known to collectors of Italian majolica.
A decorative and versatile piece. It looks lovely on a shelf or a dining table, as a vase for dried or fresh flowers, or in a collection of Italian ceramics.
