Description from the seller

Beautiful antique statuette depicting Martin Luther, a major figure of the Protestant Reformation, standing in ecclesiastical robes and holding a book. The sculpture rests on a substantial architectural base richly ornamented with Neo-Gothic motifs and relief portraits of Protestant reformers.

The front face of the base bears the famous German quote attributed to Martin Luther at the Diet of Worms in 1521:

« Hier stehe ich, ich kann nicht anders. Gott helfe mir. Amen. »

Translation: « Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise. God help me. Amen. »

The base also features the names of Zwingli and Calvin, two essential figures of the Reformation. The whole is a decorative object with historical and religious character, bearing witness to the importance accorded to the memory of the Protestant Reformation in 19th century Germany.

The depiction of Luther is part of the tradition of commemorative monuments devoted to the reformer, notably the Worms monument designed by sculptor Ernst Rietschel.
