Description from the seller
Civil History of the Kingdom of Naples by Pietro Giannone
Milan, for Nicolò Bettoni, 1821-1822.
9 volumes in octavo (approx. 23 × 15 cm).
Complete edition in nine volumes of the magistral work by Pietro Giannone (1676-1748), Neapolitan jurist and historian, published in the series «Biblioteca storica di tutte le nazioni» (Second Class).
The Civil History is one of the monuments of eighteenth‑century Italian historiography. Unlike traditional chronicles focused on battles and dynasties, Giannone for the first time constructs a history that is entirely civil: institutions, laws, customs, relations between temporal and spiritual power, and the evolution of the Kingdom’s police from the Roman period up to the early seventeenth century. The work, originally published in Naples in 1723, aroused scandal for its critique of the temporal power of the Church and ecclesiastical immunities; it cost the author exile, excommunication, and imprisonment, turning him into an emblematic figure of Italian Enlightenment thinking and a precursor of modern historiography.
This Milanese edition by Bettoni (1821-1822) is one of the most widespread and complete editions of the nineteenth century, still sought after today for the completeness of the text and for the solidity of the typography.
Contemporary binding, backs with raised bands, gilded borders and ornaments, titles «GIANNONE STORIA» and numbering 1-9 in gold, monogram «C.G.S.» at the bottom. Boards and edges marbled.
Conditions: stains, dirt and browning diffuse to the papers, typical of the age; some bindings show wear and chafing to the boards and edges. nonetheless a solid, complete and fully usable copy, with the volumes well kept together.
Work of primary importance for the history of the Mezzogiorno (the Southern Italy), for the law and for Italian Enlightenment thought.
Complete set in period binding, increasingly rare to find intact on the antiquarian market.
Ideal for collectors of Neapolitan history, eighteenth‑century historiography and nineteenth‑century bindings.
