Italian school (XX) - Madonna addolorata

Oil painting on canvas depicting the Virgin of Sorrows in prayer. The work fully fits within the Italian sacred painting tradition of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, strongly influenced by the classical iconography of great masters such as Guido Reni and Sassoferrato.
The composition shows the Madonna half-length, with her head covered by a white veil that frames her emaciated and absorbed face. The joined hands and the gaze turned upward give the scene an intense spiritual and emotional charge, a characteristic of devotional painting of the era. The contrast between the sober tones of the garments and the dark background highlights the plasticity of the figure and the shaping of the face.

The work presents in good overall conservation condition. On the back of the canvas there are reinforcement patches as evidence of past conservation interventions. The wooden frame's stretcher has been reinforced at the back with corner brackets to guarantee its structural stability. The painting is sold accompanied by a carved gold-wood frame.
