Description from the seller
Historic Droste’s Cocoa Tin – iconic nurse – Haarlem – probably 1920s–1930s
A real eye-catcher from Dutch chocolate history. This characterful Droste’s cocoa tin combines a deep red background, golden yellow accents, and the famous nurse with her tray. The elegant lettering, the richly worked coat of arms decor, and the ornamental lid make it a particularly decorative collectible.
On the nurse’s tray sits a smaller cocoa tin bearing the same image again: the famous Droste effect, where an image repeats itself. This logo originated around 1900 and grew into one of the most recognizable examples of Dutch packaging advertising.
A glimpse with international history
Beside “Droste’s Cacao” and “Haarlem – Holland” the tin bears the English text:
“For Eng: & Colonies – nett 2 lb.”
This imprint points to packaging for the English market and colonies and reminds of the international distribution of Haarlem cocoa. The mention of 2 lb refers to the original fill weight.
The tall form with rounded corners and the decorative lid give the tin a graceful appearance. Wonderful in a country-style kitchen, on a historic shop shelf, or in a collection of old advertising tins.
