John Bevort, Utrecht, 30 November 1917 - Schoorl, 31 January 1996
John Bevort studied under Chris Agterberg and G. Nijenhuis in Utrecht. He lived and worked in North Holland, near the dunes, where he worked with Spartan discipline until a very late age. He also made many trips through Europe and the U.S. and was a member of the International Organisation of Free Art.
John Bevort settled around 1960 in the North Holland town of Schoorl and is therefore known as “the Schoorl painter.” He died here on 31 January 1996. He has had exhibitions in Europe and America. He was a teacher to painters such as Gerard Ernens and Peter Brouwer.
John Bevort became best known for his naturalistic landscapes, beach and sea views, and hunting scene paintings painted with a palette knife. He also gained recognition through exhibitions in Europe and the United States, and through the publication of reproductions of his work.
What Bévort could do with the palette knife was very special. With precise strokes, no matter how directly applied, he could create a mysterious yet contemporary romanticism on the canvas. As a viewer you are compelled to take a stance and to examine your own emotions. They are very characteristic paintings he created; the scenes he managed to depict on the canvas seem to impose themselves on you with almost insistent force.
