Jan Hillebrand Wijsmuller attended the drawing class at the Felix Meritis society in Amsterdam. In 1876 he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. Subsequently he studied at the royal academies of The Hague and Brussels. Around 1878 he received a royal subsidy, allowing him to develop freely as an artist.
The beauty of the Dutch landscape was an important source of inspiration for him. Born in Amsterdam, his other works highlight the dynamism and change of urban life. When he visited his Amsterdam fellow student Jan Voerman senior, Wijsmuller often painted the village scenes of Hattem. A pleasant walking route through this old Hanseatic town takes you along Wijsmuller’s paintings as he created them in and around Hattem.
