AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Hand-painted Satsuma ceramic bowl - Kannon motif and Arakan - Japan - Meiji Period (1868-1912)

Refined Satsuma ceramic bowl dating from the late Meiji period (late 19th - early 20th century), of excellent Japanese artisanal craftsmanship intended for the Western export market.
The interior is richly hand-decorated with polychrome enamels and abundant raised highlights in genuine 24-karat gold (moriage). The main scene depicts a complex Buddhist composition with the deity Kannon (goddess of compassion) surrounded by the arakan (the ascetic disciples of the Buddha), recognizable by their golden halos and expressive faces rendered with meticulous painting.
The exterior wall features a continuous decorative band with wavy and stylized motifs reminiscent of coral or marine elements in red and green tones. The base shows the typical cream-colored ceramic with a dense, authentic craquelé glaze (craquelure) consistent with the period and a circular unglazed foot darkened by time, devoid of marks.
