Maria in Adoration before the sleeping Christ Child, oil on panel from the 17th century European Baroque school, Europe, sold with frame.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

European School of the 17th Century (Baroque)
Mary in Adoration before the Sleeping Christ Child.

Oil on panel (consisting of two joined planks). 66.5 x 51 cm (+ frame)
Age-appropriate condition with signs of use. Natural craquelure and a visible vertical tension crack running through the face of Mary. On the back there is a contemporary construction securing, consisting of a broad fixed central rib and a dovetail element (wood butterfly) in the lower area. Presented in a modern frame.

This devotional cabinet piece characteristic of religious production in the 17th century focuses in a vertical composition entirely on the intimate relationship between mother and child. With hands folded and gaze lowered, the Virgin Mary gently contemplates the Christ Child in quiet stillness.
The Christ Child lies stretched on a gray cloth with silky reflections. In Baroque Christian iconography, the deep sleep of the Christ Child, together with the white or gray cloth, serves as a conscious allegorical prefiguration of his later burial and imminent sacrifice.

The work sits firmly in the tradition of Baroque classicism. The fine features of the Madonna—with narrow, curved eyebrows, lowered eyelids, and a slight smile—recall the Florentine school (notably the circle of Carlo Dolci) as well as compositions of the Spanish School of the 17th century.

The painting demonstrates a high degree of craftsmanship in the use of glazes, reflected in the depth and nuances of the Virgin's red mantle. The artist refrains from radical chiaroscuro and instead favors a diffuse light treatment, accentuated by the fine, independent light spots (glories) around both faces.

The back of the painting offers important technical clues for dating. The original wooden support was stabilized using historical Haute Époque techniques: a broad vertical crosspiece is secured with wrought metal clamps and is reinforced at the bottom by a dovetail joint. This construction has preserved the panel's structural integrity for centuries, despite the natural working of the wood.

Provenance: Private collection, Netherlands.
