Description from the seller
Five Damask Linen Napkins with Magnificently Embroidered L.B. Initials
A striking set of five generously proportioned antique linen napkins, distinguished by their magnificent hand-embroidered L.B. initials, worked in exceptionally high relief.
Dating from 1910–1920, these napkins are particularly interesting for the contrast between the relatively understated damask ground and the extraordinary richness of the embroidery. The damask itself is fairly discreet, with just a little raised relief, which I suspect was deliberately chosen to allow the magnificent monogram to take centre stage.
The initials L.B. are double-embroidered in very high relief, each letter incorporating delicate open flowers. The effect is both elegant and remarkably sculptural, with the embroidery standing proud against the linen background.
The monogram follows the classic English style of lettering, with a choreographed arrangement of the initials and an excellent finish throughout. It is this combination of scale, precision and decorative detail that gives these napkins their particular distinction.
In the early twentieth century, fine linen was an expensive commodity, both to produce and to embellish by hand. I would imagine that these napkins were specially commissioned by a prosperous French family, for whom such beautifully personalised table linen represented a considered investment in quality and refinement.
A distinctive and luxurious set, offering a wonderful glimpse into the tradition of fine French household linen at the beginning of the twentieth century.eir dimensions are exceptional, measuring 85 cm in width—a generous size rarely encountered toda
