André Castelot's Histoire de Napoléon Bonaparte, a ten-volume complete French edition published in 1969 by Librairie Jules Tallandier, bound in red leather with gilt decoration, 393 pages.
Description from the seller
A magnificent complete ten-volume edition of André Castelot's Histoire de Napoléon Bonaparte, published in Paris by Librairie Jules Tallandier in 1969 to commemorate the bicentenary of Napoleon Bonaparte's birth.
An exceptionally decorative and imposing set, beautifully presented in matching rich red publisher's leather bindings, extensively embellished with gilt decoration.
Each front cover features the imperial eagle beneath the Napoleonic crown, surrounded by an elaborate gilt ornamental border. The spines are equally impressive, with richly gilt panels incorporating imperial eagles, bees, floral ornamentation, the author's name, title and individual volume numbers.
The books feature striking green and golden-yellow silk endpapers, gilt upper page edges and ribbon page markers, creating a particularly luxurious appearance.
The complete work provides a detailed account of Napoleon's extraordinary life, from his birth in Corsica in 1769 and early military career through the French Revolution, the Consulate, the First Empire, his military campaigns, abdication, exile and final years on Saint Helena.
Written by the distinguished French historian André Castelot (1911–2004), the work is illustrated throughout with numerous black-and-white historical portraits, documents, engravings and other illustrations, both within the text and on separate pages.
