AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Magnificent Italian painting from the first half of the 18th century. Oil on canvas depicting the biblical episode of Moses driving away the shepherds from the spring of Midian. Having fled from Egypt, Moses helps the daughters of Jethro by scattering the shepherds who prevented them from drawing water at the spring. The canvas clearly reveals the hand of the great Neapolitan artist Domenico Brandi (1684-1736), one of the leading interpreters of animal painting.
Son of an artist, Brandi also worked in Rome in the workshop of Rosa da Tivoli where he acquired the master’s illustrative and bucolic taste. It is worth noting the execution quality in the realization of the landscape, with splendid classical ruins, and of the draught animals, almost protagonists in the composition and described with anatomical precision. (The painting is not currently accompanied by an authentication, but one can be requested upon payment of the related additional costs).
Large in size and impactful, ideal for a reception room or prestigious professional study. Scenographic 20th-century frame, with beautiful decoration, with a few small flaws and signs of time. Work already restored with lining, replacement of the canvas and retouching of color in small points. There is an evident color loss in the central part (see photo), easily restorable, overall in good conservation condition. Painting size: H 148.5 x W 105 cm.
