Meiji period Satsuma ceramic teacup and saucer set from Japan, titled Shimazu-Familie Shimazu-Mon – Arhats & Drache, 6 cm high and 14 cm wide, attributed to Senzan and signed Dai Nippon Satsuma Senzan, provenance private collection.
Description from the seller
An exquisite and very fine Japanese Satsuma teacup set (cup and matching saucer) from the late Meiji period. Both the cup and the saucer are masterfully and intricately painted in polychrome enamel colors and rich gold gilding. The décor features a gathering of Arhats (Rakan / Buddhist saints) with expressive, individually designed faces and golden halos, surrounded by a delicate dragon motif. Notably, the cup’s fine interior painting includes two additional Arhats on the bottom, which attests to a superior workshop quality. The cup handles are sculpted in the form of a dragon’s body. • Origin: Japan • Style: Satsuma ware (fine, ivory-colored stoneware with characteristic crackle glaze) • Signature: On the underside of both pieces there is a reddish-brown cartouche with gold inscription: “Dai Nippon, Satsuma, Senzan” (大日本 薩摩 仙山) – “Great Japan, Satsuma, [made by] Senzan.” Above the signature sits the cross-shaped crest (Mon) of the Shimazu clan. Condition: Very good, age-appropriate condition.
