Description from the seller
Val Saint Lambert – “Teniers” Vase – Emerald Green Overlay Crystal – Hand-Cut Art Deco – CP 122 – Belgium, 1940s, Signed
An exquisite Art Deco crystal vase by the prestigious Belgian manufactory Val Saint Lambert, model “Teniers”, dating to the 1940s — a period when the renowned crystalworks achieved exceptional mastery in the art of hand-cut overlay crystal.
Executed in magnificent emerald green overlay crystal over clear crystal, the vase captivates with its intense, jewel-like colour and remarkable brilliance. The deep green evokes the beauty of a precious emerald, revealing fascinating variations of colour, transparency and light.
Entirely hand-cut, the vase features an intricate geometric diamond-cut pattern around its upper section, creating countless sparkling facets. Below, elegant elongated cuts reveal the transparent crystal beneath the emerald green overlay, producing a striking contrast between rich colour and brilliant clarity.
Its beautifully balanced silhouette, with a gently flared opening, narrow waist and subtly widening base, is a refined expression of Art Deco design.
The model “Teniers” is documented in the original Val Saint Lambert catalogue, with this example corresponding to cut pattern CP 122. The catalogue illustration is included among the photographs. The vase also bears the original engraved Val Saint Lambert signature on its underside. Together, the signature and catalogue documentation provide strong confirmation of its authenticity.
A wonderful example of Belgian crystal craftsmanship, equally beautiful as a standalone decorative object or filled with a delicate spring bouquet. Its timeless elegance makes it ideal for both classic and contemporary interiors.
Height: Approximately 15.5 cm.
Condition: Good vintage condition, particularly considering its age of approximately 80 years. There is a very small, barely noticeable chip on the exterior underside of the base, visible in the photographs. Otherwise, the vase retains its beautiful clarity, rich emerald colour and brilliant hand-cut decoration.
A charming collector’s piece for admirers of Val Saint Lambert crystal and authentic Art Deco design.
Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks.
The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp.
The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics.
Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation.
