Hand-signed limited edition print Snowing (雪もよい) by Nishijima Katsuyuki (born 1945), Japan, 1997, measuring 27.3 × 19.5 cm, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Katsuyuki Nishijima was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1945.
The Japanese title 雪もよい (Yuki Moyoi) can be translated as “Snow Approaching” or “Snowy Weather.”
Remarkably, Katsuyuki Nishijima's prints deliberately exclude modern elements; there's a noticeable absence of cars or contemporary achievements. Furthermore, his prints rarely feature individuals, presenting empty views of Kyoto's narrow lanes or serene snowy village roads. These depictions devoid of human presence evoke a haunting resemblance to the woodblock prints of Hasui Kawase, who often depicted solitary figures without revealing their faces, creating an eerie atmosphere.
Katsuyuki Nishijima takes it a step further by portraying deserted streets and landscapes. Nishijima is a technically adept artist, evidenced by his authored book on the art of printmaking, which attests to his mastery.
