Description from the seller
Emer de Vattel
The Law of Nations, or Principles of the Law of Nature, applied to the conduct & affairs of nations & sovereigns.
London, s.i., 1758.
1 volume (out of 2) quarto (25 x 18.5 cm), marbled calf (period binding), spine with raised bands, title and volume pieces in morocco, triple gilt border on the boards, red edges, ex-libris, title pages in red and black, with a vignette, xxvi-[24]-541 pages (complete volume). Volume II missing, scuffed boards, caps exposed, angular tear leaf a3, some foxing. Good overall condition.
Volume I only. Original edition of this foundational text, providing the first clear and elegant description of the international legal order. The master work of Emer de Vattel (1714–1767), regarded as one of the most influential authors in the history of the Law of Nations and International Law, includes a preface in which he justifies his project and specifies the legal perspective he intends to follow, and preliminaries that recount the general ideas of the Law of Nations.
The first volume is divided into 2 books: the first concerns the characteristics of the nation, the second is devoted to external relations. According to the principle of the equal sovereignty of states — each of them composed of a society of free men.
PROVENANCE: From the Bibliothèque Henri Dard, Lawyer.
A pleasant copy.
