Portrait of a man with a black hat, Dark Academia, oil on canvas attributed to Pierre Delhaye (19th century), France, 1887, 77 by 59 cm, signed, framed, in Romanticism style.
Description from the seller
Interesting late 19th-century male portrait, depicting a bearded man with a wide-brimmed black hat and a dark suit, characterized by an intense expression and an austere and evocative atmosphere—Dark Academia.
The palette is dominated by brown, black, and dark green tones, with a skilled contrast between the illuminated face and the deep background. The work presents an aesthetically strongly evocative character, today particularly appreciated also in interiors inspired by the Dark Academia style.
The painting bears a signature in the upper left, apparently legible as Delhaye??
Restored in 1986
Features
Technique: oil on canvas
Condition
The work shows a painted surface with visible craquelure and signs of time and small losses of color, as well as reflections on the varnish in the photographs. The signature and some details require closer examination. It is advised to carefully view all photographs to assess the condition. The frame is included.
A portrait with strong visual presence, suitable for both collectors of nineteenth-century figurative painting and for classical or contemporary interiors.
Provenance from a private collection, purchased in France in the 1980s
