Antique French 18 kt yellow gold ring featuring a single oval opal main stone (0.35 ct) set in a halo of six table-cut diamonds (0.14 ct) and six table-cut rubies (0.12 ct), total 0.61 ct, size EU 54 (US 6 ¾), with no laboratory report.
Description from the seller
An antique French gold ring, c. 1798-1809.
An oval color play cabochon opal stone set in a halo of six table-cut diamonds and six table-cut rubies in a cluster 18k gold ring. The head of the ring has a concave base to follow the rounded shape of the finger. The shanks are smaller at the base and widened towards the head. The upper edge of the inner collet is pressed over the opal's crown, securing the gem in place. Both inner and outer collets are delicately decorative with millegraining.
History
Origin: Rouen, France. The ring was sold in Rouen, France, by LeCarpentier (Victor LeCarpentier à Rouen, 1822-1909, ORFEVRE BIJOUTIER DEMEURANT À ROUEN RUE GRAND PONT N° 66). The exact jeweler who produced the ring is uncertain, as LeCarpentier owned a jewelry store [bijouterie joaillerie] (see picture) since 1853, selling both new and vintage (for his age) items.
Period and date: Circa the 1780s–1810s. As an oblong oval with a full-face design, the assay office mark suggests the 1798-1809 period. The absence of a hallmark and a maker's mark (poinçon d'orfèvre) may indicate the earlier revolutionary period, but no assay-mark stamps existed from 1789 to 1797.
Marks
Assay office mark (?): An oblong oval shape with a full-face design outside the ring's band.
The stones
• Principal opal size: Length 4.5mm; Width 3.0mm, 0.35 ct.
• Surrounding diamond sizes (six diamonds): 1.5 x 1.5 mm (each),
• Surrounding ruby sizes (six rubies): 1.2 mm x 1.1 mm (each).
• Total diamond weight: 0.14ct.
• Total ruby weight: 0.12ct.
Band
• Metal Composition: 18ct yellow gold (touchstone tested), 2.4 g.
• Band Size: Inner diameter 17.2 mm, circumference 54 mm, UK N ½ / US 6 ¾.
The ring overall
Front Head Dimensions: Length 25mm; Width 21mm; Height of Setting: 5.5mm
Weight: 2.6 g
General Wear: Excellent; wear commensurate with age.
Condition: All stones secure and safely set, no damage to the setting. Minor scratches due to age. There are no significant scratches.
Box
The box is crafted from wood and dark purple leather, hand-assembled with a brass hinge and catch, and tailored to fit the specific item. Inscription: LeCarpentier, Rue G. Pont, Rouen. Circa 1860s-1870s.
Provenance
The item has been in the same family since the 1890s.
Antique rings often undergo refurbishment, remodeling, or repairs, and such pieces frequently bear marks of this care. We present this antique ring in its authentic state, refraining from removing micro-scratches. The priority was to preserve the ring's genuine allure and history. However, the new owner can take it to a local goldsmith for a cosmetic refresh. Shipping is registered for your security. For shipments, import duties and other charges may apply.
