Description from the seller
Paul-Léon Jazet (1848–1918)
- The Clairon at the Village and Young Farmgirl – 1895
Paul-Léon Jazet (1848–1918), a French painter of genre and military scenes, regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon. His works are today regularly featured in major international public auctions. His auction record reaches 137,000 USD, achieved in New York in 2014 for The Death of Lord Nelson (1882).
Very fine military genre scene, signed and dated 1895, depicting a French soldier sounding the bugle in front of a young woman covering her ears, while a child, holding an apple, watches the scene. The almost humorous character of the subject contrasts with the great precision given to the uniforms, equipment and expressions of the characters.
A lively composition and particularly charming, characteristic of Paul Jazet’s taste for anecdotal and narrative military scenes.
Oil on panel signed bottom right: 35 × 27 cm.
Presented in a pretty antique frame in wood and gilded stucco, in the Louis XVI style, richly moulded and adorned with vegetal friezes. 56x49 cm.
The painting is in very good condition, the frame is in good condition with some minor losses and retouchings to note.
