Description from the seller
This is a Japanese Matcha tea bowl crafted in the Tsugaru-yaki style, a pottery from Aomori Prefecture. Tsugaru-yaki is renowned for its rustic and warm aesthetic, deeply rooted in the local environment of northern Japan.
[Artistic Features & Materials]
Glaze:
This bowl features a deep Black Tenmoku glaze, providing a classic and dignified base.
Apple Ash Glaze (Ringo-yu):
A significant characteristic of Tsugaru-yaki is the use of Apple Ash Glaze, made from the wood ash of local apple trees—a specialty of Aomori. The cream-colored "drip" effect seen on this bowl is a beautiful application of this unique glaze, adding a soft, organic touch to the dark Tenmoku surface.
Form:
The body features subtle horizontal finger-marks (undulations), making it comfortable to hold during the tea ceremony.
Foot (Koudai):
The base is left unglazed, revealing the coarse and sandy texture of the clay, which is a signature trait of authentic Tsugaru ware.
[About the Kiln]
Tsugaru Toen (津軽陶苑): Produced by one of the most prominent kilns in the Tsugaru region. The kiln is celebrated for harmonizing traditional techniques with the natural resources of the region.
[Condition]
Please note a small natural iron spot/pinhole (visible in the detailed photo), which is a common and appreciated "scenery" (keshiki) in Japanese pottery, resulting from the firing process.
[Inclusions]
Comes with its original wooden box (Tomobako), signed and stamped by the kiln to guarantee its authenticity.
[Specifications]
Height: 8.0 cm
Diameter: 13.5 cm
Foot diameter: 6.0 cm
