AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Flamish Gothic Christ

Late 15th century.

Provenance: Former private Dutch collection.
Region: Flanders.
Period: Late 15th century.
Material: Carved wood, partially polychromed.
Style: Late Gothic / Hispano-Flemish tradition.

Dimensions: 73 × 16 × 14 cm.

An important devotional sculpture representing Christ crucified, carved in wood and belonging to the Flemish sphere of the late 15th century. The work preserves a clearly late Gothic character, visible in the figure’s hieratic frontal stance, the elongated proportions, and the intense spiritual expressiveness of the face.

The head, tilted to one side, presents deeply dramatic features, with wide-open eyes and angular traits that recall Northern European religious sculpture during the transition between International Gothic and the early naturalistic models. The hair is worked into thick, wavy tufts, falling rigidly over the shoulders in clear continuity with the medieval Flemish tradition.

The torso shows a schematic, verticalized anatomy, with a narrow rib cage and a strong sense of bodily asceticism. Particularly notable is the treatment of the legs and feet, still fully Gothic in conception, with frontal arrangement, broad feet and simplified toes, elements that reinforce a very early chronology within European cruciform sculpture.

The perizonium is organized with rigid, geometric folds, still distant from the later Renaissance dynamism. The sculpture also preserves significant remnants of polychromy and ancient preparation, as well as an intense historic patina derived from centuries of devotion and liturgical exposure.

The rear side reveals an ancient construction of great interest, with ancient assemblies for the arms using pegs and traditional dowel, a technique common in large late-medieval crucified figures intended for worship or altarpieces. Natural cracks, surface erosion and stabilized ancient galleries of wood-borers are also observed, coherent with the piece’s age.

A work of notable sculptural force and great historical authenticity, representative of Flemish Gothic sculpture from the late 15th century.
