Description from the seller

Attributed to Joaquín Torres García (1874–1949)
"Grecian Scene" – Gouache and Ink on Paper

An exceptionally expressive and rare work on paper attributed to the prominent Latin American Modernist Joaquín Torres García. The work presents a classically inspired scene with two female figures in an architectural setting – a representation that, in its calm monumentality and clear formal language, strikingly reflects the connection between ancient visual tradition and modern reduction.

The composition captivates with its harmonious color palette and the characteristic stylistic simplification, reflecting Torres García’s early and decorative periods. Of particular note is the balanced spatial distribution as well as the subtle, yet effective, line work that lends the depiction timeless elegance.

The work is signed lower right with “Torres Garcia.”

A significant value arises from the provenance: The work was recorded in 2012 at Christie’s South Kensington, London, under the title “Grecian Scene” as Gouache and Ink on Paper. The corresponding submission document is available and will be provided to the buyer. This documented provenance underscores the art-historical relevance and makes the work particularly attractive to collectors.
