Description from the seller

Portrait of a Gentleman

An interesting male portrait belonging to the Spanish school of the 20th century, executed within a figurative language marked by expressionalist sensitivity, in which the will to faithfully represent the model coexists with a free and deeply pictorial interpretation of the face.

The work presents an elderly man, depicted frontal and through a close framing that concentrates all attention on his features. The character, nearly bald, with round glasses and a light shirt with a tie, directly meets the viewer’s gaze, establishing an immediate presence of notable psychological intensity.

One of the most interesting aspects of the painting is the treatment of light and facial modeling. The face is built with visible brushstrokes and a chromatic range that deliberately deviates from strict naturalism. Ochers, pinks and earth tones coexist with violet, grayish and greenish shadows, especially pronounced on one side of the face.

This expressive use of color allows relating the work to certain tendencies of European expressionist portraiture from the 20th century, in which the psychological characterization of the subject becomes as important as physical likeness. The painting does not seek the polished finish typical of academic portraiture, but a more direct, human and introspective representation.

The strong frontal presentation, the sobriety of the background, and the absence of additional elements also recall certain solutions developed by expressionist realism and, in a broad sense, by Central European New Objectivity, especially in its interest in the individual, compositional austerity, and the intensity of the gaze. These references should be understood solely as stylistic affinities and not as a direct link to those movements.

Special attention deserves the treatment of the round glasses, which have become almost one of the structural elements of the portrait. Their dark lines outline the eyes and considerably reinforce the expression of the character, while the light and shadow asymmetries avoid an overly rigid construction.

The background has been reduced to a neutral surface in earthy, grayish and greenish tones, with no concrete spatial references. This economy of elements once again directs all attention to the face and reinforces the intimate and psychological character of the composition.

The brushwork remains perceptible in numerous areas, particularly on the shirt, the collar, and the head modeling, imparting to the surface a vibration characteristic of expressionist figurativism.

The result is a portrait of considerable personality, placed between realism and expressionism, where the interest in the individual identity of the subject combines with a subjective use of color and painterly matter.

For its formal characteristics, the work can be cataloged within the Spanish expressionist school of the 20th century, within the tradition of the modern figurative portrait.

The work is presented in a characteristic wavy-edged gold frame.

The conservation status should be carefully assessed using the provided photographs, which are an integral part of the description and allow the appreciation of the signs of age and use.

The frame is included free of charge as a gift, without attributing commercial value to it and not considered an integral part of the work. Any potential damage suffered exclusively by the frame during transport cannot be a ground for a claim.

The work will be carefully professionally packed, using materials suitable to provide maximum protection during transport.

IMPORTANT: shipments to islands, extrapeninsular territories, or destinations requiring customs procedures may incur additional transport, handling and/or customs costs, which will be borne by the buyer.
