Half-morocco binding with brown corner pieces signed "Joly fils." Spine with five raised bands. Compartments adorned with floral-motif borders. Date at the tail. Gilt head. Gilt fillets on the covers.
Work illustrated by O. D. V. Guillonnet, consisting of the cover and 19 etchings by X. Lesueur, of which 9 are hors-texte including the frontispiece and 10 are in-text at mid-page. Framing around the text.
"Alphonse Daudet based his play on a story of the same name from Lettres de mon moulin (1869): a country boy falls in love with a young Arlésienne seen at the arenas. Although he never crosses paths with her again, he persuades his parents to consent to marriage, learns that she has probably had a relationship with another man, renounces the marriage, and, to reassure his family, pretends to forget her but ultimately commits suicide."
Wear to the lower edge as well as at the corners, light wear on the covers. The interior is in very beautiful condition, almost defect-free. The flaws are visible in the photos.
