Japanese Shino-yaki yuzuhada matcha tea bowl, made of clay, 11 cm in diameter and 8.5 cm high, approx. 400 g, with a feldspar glaze producing a fine yuzuhada pinhole texture and iron-rich fire markings, a hand-carved kodai foot ring, and an incised potter’s mark; condition Fair with heavy use and possible minor parts missing.
Description from the seller
An impressive and expressive Japanese ceramic matcha tea bowl featuring characteristics of Shino-yaki pottery. The bowl is coated with a thick feldspar glaze that has created a fine pin-hole texture (often referred to as "orange peel" or yuzuhada (柚子肌) in traditional Japanese ceramics), contrasted beautifully against iron-rich reddish-brown fire markings (hiiro).
The form is sturdy and well-balanced, sitting on a broad, hand-carved foot ring (kodai) that reveals the raw, light-colored clay body. Near the foot ring, a potter’s mark (seal/signature) is incised into the clay.
Features & Aesthetics:
Glaze & Texture:
Beautiful contrast between milky-white glaze tones and deep reddish-orange fire marks. Fine pinholes throughout the surface reflect traditional glaze behavior during firing.
Inner Basin:
Features a smooth spiral swirl (chadamari) at the bottom, perfectly formed for whisking matcha.
Foot Ring (Kodai):
Boldly carved with clear tool marks, giving it a solid and grounded presence. A potter's mark is visible near the foot.
Dimensions & Details:
Diameter: approx. 11cm
Height: approx. 8.5cm
Foot Ring Diameter (Kodai): approx. 7.0cm
Weight: approx. 400g
Condition:
No chips or cracks detected. Please inspect the photographs carefully to assess the texture and details.
