Description from the seller
Edward Hopper: “Summer Evening, 1947”.
This offset lithograph is in very good condition.
Format: 44 x 31 cm.
In Hopper's paintings, couples are typically used as a means to express hope or loneliness.
Here, however, the man and woman on the veranda, both young and dressed in the late forties style, form a deviation from the artist's melancholic relationship paintings.
Nevertheless the scene is imbued with inner tension. The two figures, lit like actors on a stage, stand almost stripped of all defense mechanisms in the bright spotlight, yet seem to feel safe.
Their meeting place is a delineated area, and the last area to be conquered is the woman's body. The colors and concentrated composition make this an almost symbolic painting.
It escapes a straightforward interpretation, but just like other Hopper works on similar themes, it offers an empirical commentary on the patterns of existence, giving the viewer the impression of witnessing the opening scene of the story of a relationship.
Never been framed and kept in a dark archival storage between acid-free protective paper.
The photos shown are part of the description.
