Description from the seller
A polychrome porcelain casket is a refined 19th-century artifact linked to the famous Ginori di Doccia manufactory.
This type of object, produced mainly in the second half of the 19th century (roughly 1860–1890), revives the raised decorative style historically defined as “alla Capodimonte.” The reliefs were originally introduced and developed precisely by the Carlo Ginori factory at Doccia as early as 1737, later becoming a distinguishing feature repeatedly reproduced with great success throughout the entire century.
The oval, lidded container features a central body carved with reserves enclosed by foliate scrolls and gilding, within which mythological scenes are finely hand-painted in polychrome and bas-relief. The lid is decorated with small standing putti or cherubs alternating with garlands, while the upper part displays a plastic triumph of classical figures. The two side handles of the casket relief are molded in the shape of a goat’s head (or ram).
Under the base is a cobalt blue mark under glaze. Although partly covered by residues and stains of dirt or old glue, the upper part shows the characteristic five-point crown, beneath which the letter “N” can be discerned. This is the historic “alla Capodimonte” mark. From 1868, Marquis Lorenzo Ginori chose to apply it officially to Doccia to stamp pieces of excellence produced with mythological reliefs and motifs, drawing on the famous Neapolitan Bourbon factory’s molds acquired decades earlier.
Good condition with normal signs of age and wear.
Dimensions are:
Height: about 14 cm
Length: about 21 cm
Depth: about 12 cm
