Description from the seller
PROJECT CONCEPT - Hello Kitty! Bye Bye Money! (Unique work)
Can a beloved character become a true commercial empire? This is the question HÖK poses in Hello Kitty! Bye Bye Money!, a work that blends humor, irony, and a critical look at the power of brands in today’s society.
Hello Kitty, one of the most recognizable characters in Japanese popular culture, appears surrounded by a large pink heart and holding a bag full of money. Her usual sweet and innocent image is transformed here into a symbol of commercial success, referencing how a simple character has become a worldwide brand, present in countless products and collaborations.
Dollar signs replace her eyes, while small shiny dots decorate the heart and other elements of the composition, evoking luxury, wealth, and the allure that major brands exert over consumers. The contrast between the character’s tenderness and the prominence of money is precisely one of the most ironical aspects of the work.
The background incorporates images from old Superman comics, creating a link between different generations of popular icons. Between graffiti, splashes, and intense colors, HÖK builds a scene where Pop Art aesthetics mingle with the energy of street art.
One of the most amusing details appears in the lower right corner: Tweety observes his tiny empty wallet, as if he had just discovered he doesn’t have enough money to buy a Hello Kitty. A humorous wink that reinforces the message of the work and invites reflection on consumption, desire, and the value we assign to objects.
Inspired by the Pop Art tradition, which turned commercial products and popular characters into protagonists of art, HÖK carries this idea into his own visual universe, using familiar images to tell stories with a second reading.
The result is an original, colorful, and provocative piece that invites you to smile, but also to reflect on how brands have become part of our identity and our desires.
Because, in the world of consumption, even the most innocent characters can end up becoming symbols of money and power.
