Description from the seller
This Glen Elgin 12 Years Old Pure Highland Malt Scotch Whisky (750 ml, 43%) is a legendary vintage bottling with a rich history. Bottled between the 1970s and 1980s, this specific release dates back to an era when the distillery was closely linked to the renowned blended whisky brand White Horse.
Because the distillery employed traditional wooden worm tubs (old-fashioned condensing vessels), the whisky possesses a unique texture. Connoisseurs describe these specific White Horse bottlings from the 70s and 80s as complex, featuring notes of antique oak furniture, beeswax, ripe apples, honey, and subtle spices, along with a slightly oily, waxy texture rarely found in modern whiskies.
Today, Glen Elgin is owned by Diageo (the parent company that succeeded DCL). Although the official 12-year-old bottling now features a modern label, this vintage "White Horse" edition has become a sought-after collector's item, symbolizing the golden age of the Scotch whisky industry.
Pure Highland Malt / Single Malt: Although Glen Elgin is geographically located in Speyside, the umbrella term "Highland Malt" was used in the 20th century to designate the region. At the time, the term "Pure Malt" was frequently used on labels to indicate that the spirit was a 100% barley whisky from a single distillery (what we now call a Single Malt).
750 ml & 43%: The 750 ml (or 75 cl) volume and 43% alcohol content indicate that this is an export bottling. In the 1970s and 1980s, large quantities of whisky were exported, particularly to Italy (imported by companies such as Carpano or André Kerstens for the Dutch market) and the US. It was not until the early 1990s that the 700 ml bottle with 40% alcohol became the standard in Europe.
