A homogeneous set of 19 Victor Hugo volumes, illustrated, in half‑leather bindings, in French, published by Ernest Flammarion between 1924 and 1934, with inserted plates and in good condition.
Description from the seller
Stunning homogeneous 19-volume set of Victor Hugo’s Works, published by Ernest Flammarion editions in Paris in the period-typical in-18 format (approximately 12 x 18.5 cm).
This important literary series was printed in the mid-1920s (the key volumes bear workshop marks dated August and October 1924 from the famous print shops E. Grévin in Lagny and Hemmerlé in Paris).
Quality period bindings:
Each volume is dressed with an elegant half-brown morocco (chagrin/basane). The smooth backs are richly decorated with gold tooling in a romantic taste, with clear title and volume labels. The boards as well as all edges are beautifully marbled, providing a harmonious visual display that is highly decorative in a library.
A richly illustrated edition:
The great strength of this Flammarion edition is the systematic integration of magnificent wood-engraved plates beyond the text. These illustrations come directly from the historical matrices of the famous art edition by A. Houssiaux (F. Guillot, Successor), offering a unique visual record of the most powerful scenes in Hugo’s universe (The Sower, The Octopus, Gavroche, The Barricade, etc.).
Details of the 19 included volumes:
- Les Misérables (4 volumes – complete text)
- L’Homme qui rit (2 volumes – complete)
- La Légende des Siècles (2 volumes – complete)
- Les Travailleurs de la Mer (1 volume)
- Quatrevingt-Treize (1 volume)
- Han d’Islande (1 volume)
- Bug-Jargal / Le Dernier Jour d’un condamné / Claude Gueux (3 titles in 1 volume)
- Théâtre: Cromwell (1 volume)
- Théâtre: Hernani / Le Roi s’amuse (2 titles in 1 volume)
- Théâtre: Ruy Blas / Les Burgraves / Marion de Lorme (3 titles in 1 volume)
- Théâtre: Lucrèce Borgia / Marie Tudor / Angelo (3 titles in 1 volume)
- Poésie: Odes et Ballades / Les Orientales (2 titles in 1 volume)
Condition:
Solid and sound copies. Interiors are generally bright with natural, uniform aging and no invasive foxing. The bindings are firm, the crowns and joints are in good condition with minor signs of handling. The backs have undergone uniform leather desensitization, giving them a superb beige/havana patina of remarkable regularity.
A magnificent opportunity to acquire almost all of Victor Hugo’s masterpieces in a uniform period binding. Careful packaging and excellent protection for shipping."
