Antoine Arnauld, La logique ou l'art de penser, 1 volume in-12, 484 pages, French edition published in Paris in 1683 by Guillaume Desprez; original language French; binding in period morocco with speckled leather; condition described as État raisonnable.
Description from the seller
[ARNAULD (Antoine)]
Logic, or The Art of Thinking, containing, besides the general rules, several new observations proper to forming judgment.
Paris, at Guillaume Desprez, 1683.
1 volume small 12mo (16 x 9 cm), mottled calf (binding from the period), spine with raised bands ornamented, title piece in morocco, gilt inner borders and on the edges, sprinkled (gilt) edges, [4]-471-[9] pages (complete). Tear on the upper flyleaf and first leaf, corners worn, headcaps shaved, some rubbing on the boards, beginnings of a crack at the hinges, rare foxing. Acceptable condition.
Mention of a fifth edition, the first having appeared in 1662.
A famous and important work in the history of thought and often referred to as “Port-Royal Logic,” it represents the logical approach of Jansenism, a Cartesian and Pascalian take on reason, an association of reason with mathematical reasoning seen as an ideal of thought. The author was a great intellectual figure of the seventeenth century, not only as a controversialist but also as a philosopher and scholar; he collaborated with Pierre Nicole, another renowned Jansenist, in drafting this work.
Good copy.
