Marcel Fiorini (1922–2008) is a major French non-figurative painter and printmaker of the new School of Paris. Born in Guelma, Algeria, he began art at a very young age as a self-taught artist before entering the École des Beaux-Arts d’Alger between 1940 and 1942. His family settled permanently in France in 1947, and from the following year he regularly exhibited his abstract works at the prestigious Salon des Réalités Nouvelles. Considered one of the greatest innovators in 20th-century printmaking, he revolutionized the field by devising new, unprecedented intaglio techniques. His graphic investigations led him to engrave with great success on varied and unusual materials such as wood, linoleum or plaster. Renowned for his immense technical skill, he closely collaborated in the realization of interpretation engravings for major masters of modern painting such as Roger Bissière, Maria Elena Vieira da Silva or Jacques Villon. Alongside these innovations, the artist developed throughout his life an intense pictorial œuvre and shared his passion by teaching printmaking at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His distinctive prints are part of collections in prestigious international institutions, including the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris. The artist died in 2008 in Bois-le-Roi, leaving behind a fundamental graphic and plastic legacy for the history of abstract art.
