Auguste Blondel’s biography of Rodolphe Töpffer, with a bibliography by Paul Mirabaud, was published in Paris in 1886 as a first edition.
Description from the seller
A biography of the Swiss writer, artist, teacher, and pioneering comic-strip creator Rodolphe Töpffer (1799–1846).
Auguste Blondel presents Töpffer’s life alongside his literary, artistic, educational, and political interests. This work reflects a broad view of Töpffer: as a respected Genevan novelist, travel writer, teacher, school director, and professor of belles-lettres at the Academy of Geneva. He was also an important theorist of visual narrative through his 1845 Essai de physiognomonie.
This is a collaboration with Paul Mirabaud who supplied the book’s bibliography; therefore combining biography, criticism, illustrations, and bibliographical documentation.
Half tan leather binding, with marbled boards and gilt titles to the spine. Good, clean, solid condition, with a touch of rubbing only Top edge gilt. Internally in good, clean condition. Pages are fractionally darkened. Illustrations are nicely printed to art paper with tissue guards. Original covers are bound in, and clean, if a little darkened.
