Description from the seller
Florence History from the Medici domination to the fall of the Republic (1434-1531), by PERRENS, F-T.: Paris, at Maison Quantin, 1888-1890. Three octavo volumes of 604p; 517p; 533p. Quarter-moxant morocco bindings, spine labels in burgundy. Headcaps rubbed. A few scattered foxings. Manuscript inscription "hommage des éditeurs" on the flyleaf. A major work by the historian F-T. Perrens following his History of Florence from the origins to Medici domination.
F.-T. Perrens approaches this period with a very political lens. Strongly influenced by the liberal ideas of his century, he studies Florentine history as the laboratory of modern democracy. His narrative constantly juxtaposes the artistic shine of the Renaissance with the violence of political factions, plots, and the progressive erosion of public liberties.
Volume I (1888): The political ascent of the Medici family with Cosimo the Elder (1434) and the cultural golden age, but also authoritarian, under Lorenzo the Magnificent.
Volume II (1889): The temporary fall of the Medici in the face of the French invasion by Charles VIII (1494), the theological ascendancy of Jerome Savonarola, and the brief restoration of republican institutions.
Volume III (1890): The resurgence of the Medici with the support of successive popes (Leo X and Clement VII), culminating in the terrible siege of Florence and the final end of the Republic in 1530-1531.
