About the artist:

Arman (actually Armand Pierre Fernandez) was born in 1928 in Nice and died in 2005 in New York. The French object artist was one of the most important members and co-founders of the group "Nouveaux Réalistes." Arman attended art school in Nice and studied at the École du Louvre and the École National des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. His assemblage works were shown in many European cities. Arman was friends with Yves Klein from an early age. He began by dipping objects such as chains, cans, keys, and the like in ink and printing them onto paper. In doing so, Arman gave increasing attention to the individual, pre-formed object. Thus, he created trashcans or wastepaper baskets filled with products of our consumer goods industry. These were followed by accumulations of similar objects, such as radio tubes, gears, or ampoules—usually in Plexiglas cases. Arman worked with the given material as a painter uses a brush and color. He composed, but also left room for chance.

The unique character of Armagn’s works lies in the fusion of objects and portraits from the world of music and technology. He deftly mastered the ability to make music visible. Arman received the 2nd prize at the Tokyo Biennale in 1964 and the Grand Prix Marzotto in 1966. In 1968, he was invited to teach at the University of California (UCLA). In 1968 he also participated in the Venice Biennale and the documenta in Kassel. His famous paintings and sculptures are found in all major art capitals.

About the artwork:

Roland Garros is the traditional home of the Internationaux de France held annually; the tennis tournament is worldwide better known as the French Open. This is one of the official posters that were designed and produced each year for the tennis tournament at Roland Garros.
