About the artist:

Hervé Télémaque is regarded as one of the most influential representatives of French Pop Art and figurative contemporary art.
Hervé Télémaque was born in 1937 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. At age 20 he left his birthplace to settle first in the pulsating art metropolis of New York. Here he studied at the Art Students League until 1960 and encountered pioneering trends of postwar avant-garde, notably Abstract Expressionism and the American-transformed Surrealism, such as Arshile Gorky.
After completing his studies in 1961, Hervé Télémaque moved to Paris, where he mingled with the Surrealists and, under the influence of this movement, soon became one of the founders of a new stylistic direction: "Narrative Figuration" or "figuration narrative," which is written into the history as French Pop Art.
A key moment marks the year 1964, when Pop Art of American and English character made its first and fulminant appearance at the Venice Biennale, which did not fail to impress the young Hervé Télémaque. Together with the somewhat older artist colleague Bernard Rancillac and critic Gérald Gassiot-Talabot, Télémaque then initiated a legendary exhibition project: the group show "Mythologies quotidiennes" ("Everyday Mythologies"). Thirty-four modern artists working in a new, pop-figurative and often critically tinged mode came together here as the germ cell of French Pop Art, a stylistic period to which, in addition to Hervé Télémaque himself, artists such as Eduardo Arroyo, Valerio Adami, Gilles Aillaud, Erró, Gérard Fromanger and Peter Stämpfli are also attributed.
Characteristic of Hervé Télémaque’s oeuvre in the Pop era was the depiction of everyday objects; he devoted himself, genre-specifically, to painting, graphics, and sculpture in a significant degree after early collages and assemblages.
Works by the internationally renowned Hervé Télémaque are shown in numerous major museums and collections, including the Arte y Naturaleza Centro De Arte in Madrid, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museu Berardo in Lisbon, and the St. Louis University Museum of Art. Hervé Télémaque passed away in 2022 in France.
