About the artist:
Jean-Michel Meurice, born 1938 in Lille, developed two passions as a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tournai: painting and cinema. In 1960, during his military service in Algeria, he created one of his first works, uniting his two passions: a three-hundred-meter-long painted film composed entirely of the repeated traces of fingers and brushes; when projected onto a canvas, it becomes a moving painting of ten minutes. Since then, he has pursued a double career as painter and filmmaker.
In 1963 he first traveled to the USA, where he discovered a painting without codes, the abstraction of Ad Reinhardt and the dripping and allover processes that made Pollock famous. He painted large formats with spray cans or sponges, repeating forms (stripes or dots). The traditional canvas was often replaced by plastic films or other unusual supports. In 1966 he exhibited with Hantaï, Degottex, Buraglio, Parmentier and Rouan at Jean Fournier in Paris and was one of the co-founders of the Support/Surface movement. Four of his “Pénélopes” are in the Centre Georges Pompidou collections, and he designed the ceiling in the Musée Picasso in Antibes. He was awarded the Grand Prix National for his overall work in 1992. His work has been shown worldwide (Centre National des Arts Plastiques Paris, Musée d'Art moderne de Saint-Étienne, Musée Fabre, Fondation Maeght, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lille, Hermitage, Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Rio de Janeiro Museum, Madrid Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art, etc.).
About the artwork:
